Urban Forestry (Bury St Edmunds) Ltd. - Firewood Processing Project

Posted 13/02/2018 : By: Alice Goodrich

Urban Forestry (Bury St Edmunds) Ltd. secured grant funding in December 2016 to purchase firewood processing equipment in order to expand their business. LEADER funding enabled the applicant to buy a cone splitter, used to split branches and trunks lengthwise, a firewood processor and a conveyor to process the wood into logs for firewood. They were also able to buy an Avant Loader log grab to feed the log deck and unload the processed bags of wood.

The aim of the project was to convert a waste product – the wood arising from the tree surgery business – into firewood for re-sale, thus expanding the business.

Urban Forestry (Bury St Edmunds) Ltd. was founded in 1992 in Ingham, near Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. They undertake landscaping operations and tree surgery across East Anglia and the Midlands, and have since expanded in to North England and North Wales from their location in Betley, Cheshire. Urban Forestry prides themselves on delivering the visions their customers want to achieve on their projects. They are able to take on large scale commercial projects as well as smaller domestic jobs, whilst always providing a personal and tailored service.

"The Firewood Processing project would have been in jeopardy but for the LEADER funding. It meant that we could purchase the equipment needed to enable us to recycle the waste wood from our tree surgery business into a saleable product. The funding helped make this project possible, while also reducing the risk to our existing business and ensuring our cash flow was not impacted.

The project has helped us to recycle our waste wood using all the equipment that the LEADER programme helped us to buy.

We can now offer a sustainable, local and ethical product to our customers via our online company www.sawmilllogco.com and could not have done this without the funding.

The LEADER team was heavily involved throughout the grant application process. We were impressed with the support they offered. They were helpful throughout the whole process and excellent at guiding us through the application requirements, making it as simple as possible.

They understood the importance of the grant to our project and played a crucial role in helping us get approval. We would be delighted to work with the LEADER team again." - Reg, Graham, Jill and the team at Urban Forestry (Bury St Edmunds) Ltd.
